Metacenter (M)

Is the intersection of a vertical through the center of buoyancy of an inclined ship and the vertical through the center of buoyancy when the inclination approaches zero as a limit. The same principle applies to both the transverse and longitudinal metacenters. The metacenter and the relative positions of the metacenter and the center of gravity are prime factors in establishing the initial stability of a ship.
